Grace Chandler, MD
Dr. Chandler earned her medical degree from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She was one of three Chief Residents at the University of Colorado Pediatric Residency program where she assisted in designing curricula and leading working groups to improve pediatric resident education. Previously, she served as a medical student representative at Lurie Children's Center for Childhood Resilience where she worked with the Chicago Department of Public Health and used her Spanish proficiency to assist with a clinical research project.
“Although I studied English and Spanish in college, I have learned just as much about language and the power of words through pediatrics. I challenge myself to consistently use person-first language when describing my patients to respect the humanity of the child or adolescent in front of me, and I am proud of the way in which I choose my words carefully and deliberately to convey complex problems and therapies to families in an empathetic yet clear manner. This attention to language is perhaps nowhere more critical than when delivering difficult news,” shared Dr. Chandler.
Through her work advocating for and teaching trauma-informed care, Dr. Chandler has developed an important appreciation of the intimate and often deeply upsetting relationship that patients have with the medical system. She hopes to broaden awareness of adopting a trauma-informed lens with entire multidisciplinary teams to minimize medical trauma. Dr. Chandler seeks to be a leader in academic oncology and to care for patients and families throughout the duration of life-altering illnesses, continually developing skills to deliver compassionate care. She also hopes to advance the clinical environment through collaborative research and training other young pediatric doctors to think and speak with equal parts knowledge, curiosity and empathy.
